What happened to all the users? I used to always see around 1.2 million users down in the bottom bar. Now, and for quite a while, it rarely shows more than a half or a third of a million users online. Are there actually that many fewer users on the distributed database, or is it a connection issue somehow?
The number of users is calculated from the density of nodes in the DHT and then modified based on the perceived 'reachability' of your client - usually this gives a reasonably accurate and consistent number but sometimes it can get a bit whacky.

It's been fairly consistent. For the longest time, I would see around 1.2 million users online, which is about what you show. I don't remember when the change occured, but for quite a long time now, perhaps a year or so, it's been showing about a quarter of the number of users it used to show. Could it have something to do with my using a VPN? I'm not sure what else might affect this.
VPNs can definitely mess with the numbers, I've seen the same thing myself when testing
