Seeding priority by tracker
#33
I see B06 is out.
Please let me know if there are any code changes pertinent to this thread.  If yes, I'll install B06 and test.  If no, I won't.  Thanks.

No changes in B06 related to the priority stuff - rest easy!

I'll ping this thread if/when there are changes that might affect you - thanks

"I'll ping" - OK.

I don't want to hijack my own thread.  I have noticed another issue.
I am on B05 and do not want to leave Beta program at this time (as the "priority stuff" has not been released yet and I may still be able to help).
Where do I post this new issue?
Is there a Beta forum? (could not find one)
Do I open a new topic in this forum?

Thanks.

Back to the main topic of this thread (prioritizing).

Another "lucky" break in this experiment:
Remember the "dreaded" 175 Priority_10 torrents?  That tracker is currently having a "freeleech".
Everyone and his brother on that tracker is now downloading.
This is putting so much pressure on my system (with Beta prioritizing ON) that my system is now uploading 50-70% Priority_10 torrents.

I know for a fact (as I turned on these torrents only yesterday) that without these Priority_10 torrents, my system uploads at almost full bandwidth almost 24/7 Priority_01-09 torrents (give or take a few minutes of less than full bandwidth now and then).
So going from 80-90-100% bandwidth utilization with zero Priorty_10 torrents present (before yesterday) to 50-70% bandwidth utilization by Priority_10 torrents indicates to me that Priority_10 is squeezing out the lower priorities.

In my bandwidth prioritizing "dream scenario", the system would continue feeding high priority torrents at normal rates and would be completely unfazed if Priority_10 torrents go bonkerz in case of a freeleech.

Finally, a BUG:
I started downloading a few torrents from a Priority_01 private tracker.
The download is impossibly slow on Vuze.
In approx. 6 hours, Vuze managed to download 156 MB, a few KB/s at a time, with long pauses of no downloading.
From exactly the same tracker, at the same exact time (and from the same exact seeder, as I am in contact with him by PM), on another connection and other BT client, I downloaded 3 other torrents 5 GB, 3.54 GB and 5.54 GB.  A few minutes ago, when I saw that Vuze only downloaded overnight 156 MB, I moved the same exact seed to the other BT client and within seconds it started downloading at 200-300KB/sec.

What I think is happening (this is my theory, it could very well be something else):
As soon as I started the torrent in Vuze, the system (correctly) identified it as a Priority_01 torrent.  All priorities have "unlimited" download (which is what I want).  Vuze (correctly) established connection with the seed (fully 100% connected, green connection light).
However, as nothing is downloading, which the routine is constantly checking, the connection continuously cycles from  "Max upload speed" (which I have currently set at 800KB/s) to (when the routine discovers that nothing is downloading) DISABLED.  In order to function, a connection needs to be duplex (both upload and download must be simultaneously open).  So when, upon discovering that nothing is uploading, the routine switches to DISABLED, even if it only cuts off uploading, downloading also becomes impossible.  Thus the torrent downloading only 156 MB overnight, while the other BT client downloaded 5 GB, 3.54 GB and 5.54 GB.

I confirm the DOWNLOADING BUG reported above.
Turned off VPN, connect to the world directly, to avoid adding an unknown variable.

1. Turned OFF prioritizing function.
Started download (Priority_01).  Download kicked in at a steady 200-300KB/sec.  No interruptions for about 1 hour.

2.  Turned ON prioritizing function.
After a period of adjusting, seeing that nothing was downloading on Priority_01, the prioritizing routine turned Priority_01 tags to Disabled.  Download stopped immediately.  This persisted.

3.  Manually changed tag Priority_01 upload speed to "No limit".  Download kicked in immediately.  However, this did not last as the prioritizing routing cycled again to testing Priority_01, not finding an upload disabled up speed and killed the download again.

4.  Removed "1=Priority_01," from Tools>Speed Limits>Schedule and Settings. Priority_01 no longer controlled by routine. Max upload speed persists at unlimited, download continues at 200-300KB/s uninterrupted.

You have defined an upload_priority - Vuze doesn't check download speeds at all for this, it only checks upload speeds... Also, when upload is 'disabled' it doesn't prevent downloading from occurring - protocol flow still occurs in the 'upload' direction it is just data upload that is prevented by preventing the peer from requesting data - given that the peer is a seed this shouldn't make any difference as it won't being doing this.

The Tag's download speed limit should always be set to 'unlimited' - if you are seeing anything other than this then something's not right. Also check that you haven't accidentally setup another rate limit by going to Tools->Speed Limit Handler->View Current.... and checking the result.

Anyway, it sounds as if you really don't want to be including incomplete downloads in the upload priority control at all. You can do this by amending the Tag to exclude incomplete downloads. This currently requires you to create two tags, one with the tracker constraint as you currently have and then another one that selects from that Tag only the completed downloads by a constraint

hasTag( "Priority_01") && isComplete()

(for example)

Interesting though, there does seem to be some 'disable upload' bug here, I'll look into it :) Thanks

I have to update my gripe:
"This is putting so much pressure on my system (with Beta prioritizing ON) that my system is now uploading 50-70% Priority_10 torrents."

I watched for 1 day how the "freeleech" Priority_10 torrents took 50-70% of my available bandwidth and I complained about it (knowing full well that there was demand for many other lower priority torrents).
Before complaining, just to be sure I don't err, I ran various bandwidth tests to make sure that the ISP or VPN did not somehow limit the upload bandwidth.  I confirmed again and again that the connection had full ISP allowed bandwidth.

Still, I was watching Priority_10 taking most of the bandwidth, when I knew WITH CERTAINTY (as I had checked) that there were a few Priority_03 seeds uploading (plus many other Priority_07).

I can confirm that I found a BUG:

Initially, Priority_03 and Priority_07 were uploading at full blast.  (Priority_10 (thank goodness) is now "disabled").

HERE IS THE BUG:
Because of some fluctuation, the prioritizing routine got jittery and reduced bandwidth for Priority_03 to about 20KB/s.  I watched for a considerable amount of time Priority_03 stay at this level.  This, of course, artificially limits Priority_03 from downloading.  After waiting for a while for the prioritizing routine to raise the limit (it did not happen), I manually raised it to "unlimited".  Within 2-3 seconds Priority_03 was again uploading at around 300KB/s.

This gets back to my request I have previously made: stop re-evaluating higher priorities and and changing bandwidth downwards so quickly for higher priority tags!
As I am writing this, Priority_03 was dropped again to 45KB/s, while Priority_07 was increased to 500KB/s. I manually limited Priority_07 to 50KB/s and manually raised Priority_03 to "unlimited" and Priority_03 IMMEDIATELY started climbing again.

I am asking you to please revisit my suggestion:
The higher the priority, the longer the wait before you re-evaulate (3-4-5 minutes).
The higher the priority, the less reduction should apply.
The algorithm should be LESS jumpy to reduce high priority bandwidth.
The algorithm should be MORE jumpy to reduce low priority bandwidth.
All this on a gradual (interpolated) scale.

As I write this I see Priority_03 getting lowered by the algorithm again and again (and Priority_07 being too high), when I know FOR SURE that there are serious downloaders (with lots of available down speed) downloading the Priority_03 torrents I am seeding.

I have now removed "3=Priority_03," from Tools>Speed Limits>Schedule and Settings. Priority_03 no longer controlled by routine.  It is now happily uploading at 200-300KB/s, no longer being limited by the prioritizing routine.

Changes need to be made so that prioritizing (and bandwidth reduction) is done on an interpolated sliding scale.
As it is right now, I see no incentive to let my Priority_01+02+03 be part of the algorithm.  I am better off setting PERMANENTLY the up limit to "unlimited" for my high priority torrents.  (But then, if I do that, the "prioritizing" feature would not be much of a feature...)

Now, as I am writing this, I am watching in horror how Priority_10 opened up again and is uploading at 380KB/s (while Priority_03 was down to 45KB/s).  I immediately limited Priority_10 to 15KB/s, and watched Priority_03 climb to 250KB/s.

As it it right now, this algorithm and prioritizing is ineffective.

I am now disabling automatic prioritizing, and replacing with manual limits.

Please let me know when/if a new algorithm is ready for testing.

Signing off.

More programming suggestions:

1)  First of all, for any number of priorities selected by user (be it 10 priorities, as in this case, or 100 priorities or 3 priorities as in your initial test case), there is absolutely no reason in the world, at any point, to limit the upload bandwidth for your Priority #1.  The only reason to ever limit a tag's priority is to create room for a higher priority.  Priority 1 never has to make room for a higher priority, it is pointless to reduce bandwidth for Priority 1.

2)  Any priority (be it 2 or 7) at one point or another may be "the most important priority at that time".  It would be a very easy task for a programmer to do a test: "Is anything uploading on Priority_01 tags?" (there is always some announcing, polling, etc. traffic possible, but that is usually a few bytes, but I'm sure your programmers know how to figure out if something is really "downloading" or just "announcing" or "polling").  If nothing uploading, set "uploading_status=0".  If actually uploading, set "uploading_status=1".
At each iteration of your bandwidth tests, first do a check to see who is actually uploading.
If Priority_01 has uploading_status=0, and Priority_02 has uploading_status=0 and Priority_03 has uploading_status=0, and Priority_04 has uploading_status=1, then you know that Priority_04 is now your most important priority.  Give it max bandwidth and forget about reducing that bandwidth up until such time that a lower priority started uploading (uploading_status changed to 1).

3)  Institute different reactions depending on the priority position.  The priority tag all the way to the "left" should not reduce bandwidth at all, ever.  Next one to the right, if needed, should reduce bandwidth a little.  The priority tag all the way to the "right" should reduce bandwidth, if needed, a lot more.  I have seen this in the log in the from of "-6KB/s" (or -4KB/s, or so).  But if your "freeleech" bunch at Priority_10 has been given 600KB/s after a test, reducing that by doing -6KB/s will accomplish pretty much nothing.  Perhaps reducing by a % would make more sense (reduce by 30%, such as 600*0.7=420KB/s or 60*0.7=42KB/s.  In the first case you reduced by 180 KB/s, in the second case you reduced by 18 KB/s, it's all relative).

Loaded V5.6.2.1_B08
Before loading, I had torrents prioritized by bandwidth limits.

Priority_01 was loading 2 torrents, on 2 trackers (let's call them tracker A and tracker B).  Both of these are extremely important uploads.  For Priority_01 I had previously set manual bandwidth "Unlimited".
Why important uploads?
Tracker A has very rare material and the tracker has very restrictive policies.  Therefore most files are 1 GB or less, activity is very light, I can wait 2-3 months for a seed to upload, and there is almost no material I can upload new torrents.  So every KB uploaded is very important.
Tracker B has huge BD files, a strict 1:1 policy, it is extremely well seeded and because of some technical reasons I will never be able to upload new torrents.  My only chance of being there is to seed.  Usually there are 20+ seeds per torrent, and these guys seem all to have incredible upload speeds.  I receive upload slices from the tracker, but when competing with 25 other seeds (all on blazing fast upload speeds) I am lucky to get 50Kb/s upload slices.  So every KB uploaded is very important.

I loaded B08, stayed for a while on my previous prioritizing by bandwidth limits.
Priority_01 was happily loading the 2 torrents at about 50Kb/s each.  Next was Priority_02 which had so much activity on its own that I had it limited to 200Kb/s just so I don't disturb Priority_01.  Priority_03-10 were all disabled.

Then I loaded (in "Schedule and Settings") prioritizing (I set max=600).
I watched (for many minutes) and shook my head in disbelief how Priority_01 was never allowed to grow.
Priority_01 was tested, result was low, and then it was disabled.

Like this:

Code:
12:09:45] tag_priority: Priority_01=38.8 kB/s (∞), Priority_02=0 B/s (x), Priority_07=0 B/s (x), Priority_09=0 B/s (x), Priority_10=0 B/s (x)

[12:10:05] tag_priority: Priority_01: ->x (0: reducing, unstable)
[12:10:25] tag_priority: Priority_01=0 B/s (x), Priority_02=0 B/s (x), Priority_07=0 B/s (x), Priority_09=0 B/s (x), Priority_10=0 B/s (x)
[12:10:30] tag_priority: Priority_01=0 B/s (x), Priority_02=0 B/s (x), Priority_07=0 B/s (x), Priority_09=0 B/s (x), Priority_10=0 B/s (x)
[12:10:30] tag_priority: Priority_01: ->600.0 kB/s (1: raising to max)
[12:10:50] tag_priority: Priority_01=0 B/s (600.0 kB/s), Priority_02=0 B/s (x), Priority_07=0 B/s (x), Priority_09=0 B/s (x), Priority_10=0 B/s (x)
[12:10:50] tag_priority: Priority_01: ->x (1: setting to current (diffs=0 B/s/0 B/s))
[12:11:10] tag_priority: Priority_01=0 B/s (x), Priority_02=0 B/s (x), Priority_07=0 B/s (x), Priority_09=0 B/s (x), Priority_10=0 B/s (x)
[12:11:10] tag_priority: Priority_02: ->600.0 kB/s (1: raising to max)
[12:11:30] tag_priority: Priority_01=0 B/s (x), Priority_02=465.8 kB/s (600.0 kB/s), Priority_07=0 B/s (x), Priority_09=0 B/s (x), Priority_10=0 B/s (x)
[12:11:30] tag_priority: Priority_02: ->465.8 kB/s (1: setting to current (diffs=0 B/s/465.8 kB/s))
[12:11:50] tag_priority: Priority_01=0 B/s (x), Priority_02=465.8 kB/s (465.8 kB/s), Priority_07=0 B/s (x), Priority_09=0 B/s (x), Priority_10=0 B/s (x)
[12:11:50] tag_priority: Priority_07: ->600.0 kB/s (1: raising to max)

Priority_02 was allowed to grow to 400-500Kb/s.
Then the higher priorities were all raised to max (600Kb/s)
While Priority_01 was still disabled.
The algorithm consistently found reason to reduce the highest uploading priority (Priority_01), which is not necessary.

After watching this for a few minutes, I turned off automatic prioritizing and went back to bandwidth limits.
Once again I set Priority_03-10 to disabled and set Priority_02 to max 200Kb/s.
It took a little time, but Priority_01 started growing again.
Unfortunately, while the automatic prioritizing was constantly screwing with Priority_01 and disabling it, the one leecher (first one in 3 months) from Tracker A gave up on his download and disappeared.  Bummer!
Tracker B (the one with 25 seeds) is now giving me 100-200Kb/s slices I am very happy with.  (NOTE: 10-15 minutes later, as I am typing this, I am receiving 200-300Kb/s.)

I think perhaps the programmers at Vuze working on this have a different torrenting experience than I have.

Perhaps they are located on a different continent than I am, therefore their "Ping" delays to many trackers on their own continent are extremely short.
Very likely they have much higher up/down speeds than I do.
This, for them, probably creates very "steady", stable and fast connections to the tracker and to individual leechers.
Therefore the idea of taking bandwidth readings every few seconds.  If the bandwidth reads "45Kb/s" than the routine sets bandwidth limit to 45Kb/s.  If the bandwidth is "unstable", it reduces it.
This works probably very well at Vuze headquarters.

Here is the "real life" torrenting experience I have:
My Internet connection is limited (by "wide pipe" standards) to about 1 Mb/s up and 10 Mb/s down.  However, the Internet connection in itself is rock steady (fortunately, I can say that the ISP is not doing any bandwidth manipulation here).
I am on a different continent than most trackers servers and my "Ping" delays are longer (no matter how I route, there are geographical limitations).
My "real life" torrenting experience is that many (most?) Bit Torrent connections are NOT consistent and are NOT steady.  Both Downloading and Uploading, if I watch what happens to each INDIVIDUAL torrent, I see continuous, wide variations, all the time.  I can be uploading (or downloading) at 200Kb/s for a few minutes, then the speed drops to 30Kb/s for a while, then it gradually ramps up again, it may peak again at 200-300Kb/s.  It is like waves, constantly moving up and down.  There are seeders in more "challenging" situations: they stop seeding for a while (computer off? cut off by tracker? ISP? etc.)
Bottom line is that VERY FEW torrents (and very few peers) upload or download at a constant and consistent speed for the duration of the upload (or download).  This is not unique to VUZE.  I have worked with many BT clients and they all have this "wave" motion, constant up and down fluctuation.

For the purpose of "automatic, intelligent prioritizing" we can not let the algorithm cut off a high priority tag to 45Kb/s  (and keep it there for a long time) only because at the instance tested that torrent was only capable of transferring 45Kb/s.  If you wait 3 more minutes the same exact tag may go up to 300Kb/s.  But you have to give it a chance to get there!  (It will never get there if you keep cutting it off and reducing its bandwidth).  Also, I'm not sure what is the reason for this: "Priority_01: ->36.8 kB/s (0: reducing, unstable)" UNSTABLE reduction, but in the short term of course the bandwidth is unstable.  I very rarely see "stable" bandwidths per torrent.

Also, as I wrote in my previous post, I see no reason whatsoever to reduce the ACTIVELY uploading highest priority torrent.  The ACTIVELY uploading highest priority torrent should be set to max until such time as the torrent stopped uploading.  I know FOR SURE that the Priority_01 torrent was ACTIVELY uploading (for hours) before I turned on V5.6.2.1_B08 and turned on "automatic prioritizing".  The routine completely failed to identify that Priority_01 was ACTIVELY uploading and immediately and persistently either drastically reduced bandwidth (to values such as 45Kb/s) or entirely disabled uploading on that tag.

As it takes me 30 minute (or more ) to write all of this, I keep watching the Priority_01 tag (which I have manually set to "unlimited").  I continue to see the wave-like dance: going to 300Kb/s, than to 50Kb/s, than back to 250Kb/s, than to 70Kb/s, than disappearing completely for a while, than starting to climb again, etc.

The algorithm as it is right now did not detect the ACTIVELY uploading activity on Priority_01.  Whatever activity was detected either triggered setting limits that were too low (for the highest available priority) or disabled entirely uploading.

Testing for this version is now concluded.
While waiting for another version, I am reverting to manually setting bandwidth limits.

With all this said, sincere thanks for working on this "intelligent prioritizing" idea.  It's maybe a bit more of a challenge than anticipated...

My previous post nearly 3 weeks ago ended with:  " It's maybe a bit more of a challenge than anticipated..."
Understatement?

The good news is that posting dropped not because anyone (staff at Vuze or me) got discouraged by the "challenge" and quit, but because the task required extended testing and communication.

After many intermediate versions (my previous post was at B05, we are now at B16) the "Intelligent Seeding" is testing VERY WELL and is close to a ready-for-production version.

What is nice about this Vuze implementation is that the user gets to select how many priority levels will be used.
For many (as in some other bittorrent clients out there), 3 priority levels will be enough (High + Medium + Low).
For others (with hundreds or thousands of active seeds), more priority levels can be used - a number that is only limited by a user's needs.
The "Intelligent Seeding" has been tested and passed with flying colors at 3 priority levels.
It is now being tested (and very close to passing) at 10 priority levels.
Next, the system will be tested with more priority levels.

The quality criteria being used is quite ambitious: Vuze Intelligent Seeding has to be significantly better than a human operator assigning seeding priorities.  At this stage, we have reached that goal (we are still testing to make sure there are no bugs left or conditions that could cause unwanted behaviors).  Vuze is capable of assigning seeding priorities exactly as desired and keeping the bandwidth utilized at the level desired by user.  And it does it better than a human operator could possibly do it.

I will continue to update here.
We hope the next version of Vuze will release with a full implementation of "intelligent Seeding".

It's been another 2+ weeks since my last update, 8 more builds (we were at B16 and now we are at B24) and very many hours of testing.

We tested with few (3 or 4) priority levels and the Intelligent Seeding function passed.
We tested with a higher number (10 priorities) and made necessary adjustments until we were satisfied.
We went to higher priority numbers.  Obviously, with higher numbers of priorities things get exponentially more complicated.  We are clearing that hurdle now.

At B24, the Intelligent Seeding function is performing extremely well, just about as well as in my most optimistic dreams before this project was undertaken.  Taking an optimistic dream from the dream state up to computer code state and making that work is not always possible.
Due to both:
1.  The incredible skill of the master programmers at Vuze, and
2.  A lot of perseverance
we are getting so much closer now to the fully working, ready for release version.

What is amazing about this function is that it will work great for people with just a few seeds that need to be prioritized, but it will work equally great if you have thousands of seeds that need to be prioritized.  The prioritizing function will work great if you have a low bandwidth ISP plan and will work equally great if you have incredibly high upload bandwidth.  Finally, it will play well with others: it will work fine if your Vuze installation is the only Internet bandwidth user at your location or you have a busy network, with other bandwidth users.  The Intelligent Seeding prioritizer will work fine alone or in conjunction with other Schedules or Limits you have set.

More testing, perhaps a few more changes, but soon we will have an awesome "Intelligent Seeding" function in Vuze.
Stay tuned...

One more (and probably the last) update about the "Intelligent Seeding" function in Vuze:

The Seeding Prioritizer is finally stable and working amazingly well!

We have demonstrated that even if you have hundreds (or thousands?) of seeds and an "average" Internet upload speed and you keep all seeds active, in the long run all the seeds will get a chance to upload.

There are two completely opposite seeding situations:
A)  Seeds on trackers you are interested in building ratio, but they have very weak activity.
B)  Seeds on ratio-less trackers (or trackers where you no longer watch ratios) with extremely strong activity that could easily eat your bandwidth 24/7.

Without prioritizer, it is a bit of a conundrum: leave all seeds active and you are guaranteed to miss your A) important but weak uploads while B) is taking 100% of your bandwidth.  If you want to increase your important ratios , than you must constantly turn seeds on and off, maybe try bandwidth limits, etc.

With the new prioritizer function, you leave everything on.
A high priority A) seed, will be picked up by the prioritizer and put in a "protected" situation.  Even if the upload at its fullest upload speed is only moving at a very slow 3-5-8 Kb/sec, the prioritizer will make sure it continues for as long as there is demand.  That way even a slow upload can net you 1GB a day ratio, or a BD a month.

Even your low priority B) seeds will get their turn.  There will be times when the demand is very low for your high priority seeds, that's when the low priority B) crowd gets to upload.

In the end everybody is happy: you increased your high priority ratios (you are happy),  leechers can complete downloads instead of finding dead torrents (downloaders are happy).

People are usually quick (and vocal) to point out what is wrong in piece of  software.  Many times our frustrations are justified and I don't need to explain "why".  However, when a piece of software works as it should, we usually take that for granted.  Before this feature will be "taken for granted" (or someone will find some fault and start bashing), I want to point out the extremely high level of professionalism, technical competence and caring of the the developers who make Vuze possible.  First of all, just the fact that this project was undertaken (from a forum post and a note in the "suggestion box") should speak volumes.  During development of this feature, many times we hit "brick walls" or thought that "this simply can't be done".  As many times (plus one) the developers found ways to punch holes in the "brick wall" and made "what can't be done" doable.  Thanks to all!!!

That said, the next version of Vuze will have a great new feature.

So this post has been dead for 2 years, stating that the feature would be implemented in the next version. Has the feature been implemented in Vuze since then? I can't seem to find it...
