Recommended VPN/Proxy Service that work with VUZE
#1
I am a new VUZE forum member.  Should I be using a just a Proxy Service or just a VPN (or both) with VUZE.  Does this forum have a recommended list of the VPN/Proxy Services that will work with VUZE (for example, according to NewsHosting support, their VPN does not support VUZE or provide a proxy service).

After using many different VPN's, I have settled on PureVPN.  They often run half price sales (2yrs. $60) and their support is gvenerally available 24/7.  They offer many goodies with their service, such as split tunneling and internet kill if connection is lost.

I do not see the need for a proxy since, essentially, the VPN is a proxy.  On the other hand, a proxy without a VPN is dangerous and easily cracked by any entity that really wants to find your IP address.

Thanks LuvVuze for your reply.  In my search so far, the only other value for dollar VPNs I have seen so far are PIA ($39.95/yr ~ $3.33/mo) and Nord ($79/2yr ~ $3.29/mo).  I have even seen PureVPN offered for $1.91/mo on a 3 yr deal, but when you click on the link it then only shows the 2 yr deal.

I have also recently seen that some AV software (specifically TotalAV and AVG, although there may be others) supposedly have a VPN service as one of their features, but I have not investigated yet as to how good these would be.  Have you come across this and what is your opinion.

Hey k93,

First of all, welcome to Vuze. Secondly, there's a difference between a proxy and a vpn. The key element of difference between the two is encryption. While a vpn encrypts the data, a proxy does not.
Real life examples would be Opera, HSS and ivacy/pure/express/etc. While Opera markets its new feature as a vpn, it's more on the proxy side than vpn. Similary, in case of HSS, their free version or browser extention is a proxy while its paid version offers true experience of a vpn. likewise, ivacy and pure vpn are sheer vpns because they're only paid.
And lastly, unless explicitly mentioned otherwise, Almost all of these would work with Vuze. You can also contact the provider's support team to make sure if they'd be compatible with Vuze but most of the VPNs i've tried work perfectly with Vuze.

I wasn't aware that HSS had 2 versions of their VPN.  Their special lifetime discount of $99.99/yr includes "Free VPN Service", which from what you are saying, is not a true VPN.  According to NGProvider.com, Eweka also offers a  for "free" IPvanish VPN, although this is not indicated on their site.  It is looking like its best to choose each function (USP, search/indexing tool, newreader, auto-downloading tools, anti-malware, VPN, torrent client) separately (the UNIX way) to have the best chance of getting the best choice for each function, even though it may cost a bit more.

k93, you can think this all to death, get yourself a VPN that has 256 bit encryption, does not keep records of your usage (make sure they actually do not keep records, some have claimed to do so but have turned over the alleged nonexistent records when asked for them.  Google them to see real experience instead of taking their word for it), and offers the extras at a price point that is acceptable to you.  Just make sure they allow P2P (some do not), they clearly tell you which servers to use for P2P, and you bind your Local VPN address or interface (ethx) in options so nothing gets through that does not go through your VPN.

I am not hawking PureVPN, but it provides these features at a fair price.  BTW, I have never seen a 3 year deal from PureVPN.  2 years for a one year price is the best I have seen.

VPNs will take some research on your part.

How much are you willing to spend (monthly? Yearly? or Life? subscriptions),

Their physical locations (what is their country of origin, why? Well that could matter when requested are presented for user id/ip information)

Outgoing locations, some VPNs have servers in specific countries, some have servers located pretty much all over the planet.

Speed for those locations, some locations will be faster than others, and will dramatically effect your download/upload capabilities

What type of logs are kept? You can read through each VPN and read about what logs are kept, how long they are kept, what requests are honored what are not.

How are you paying for the VPN. Credit Card, Pay-Pal, Bit-Coin, etc...

But it all comes down to YOUR personal choice. You will read that some people will swear by this VPN or that VPN. So, do your homework and make your own educated choice and go with that.

Myself? I use ExpressVPN, and I've been happy with their service, you can google them, try them out for a month, read what logs they keep. It has it's own client, with built in Kill Switch (if for whatever reason the connection is dropped, then your entire Net Connection is shut off). Plus I bind the connection through Vuze, so it's a secondary safety feature that makes me feel all warm and squishy (ha ha).

So make your choice, and be happy!

What LuvVuze said. The more you stress, the more you'll complicate it. About HSS, as long as you're paying anything, you're getting a legit VPN. You can try Ivacy, Pure or any other VPN that's offering 256 bit protection and a trial/moneyback guarantee, so you can always go back if you want to.

Paying for a VPN does not insure complete anonymity.  For instance, hidemyass has been cited for allegedly turning over records that are suppose to not exist.  Paying for something is not enough to insure your privacy.  Do your due diligence and see if these VPN's are what they say by Googling them.

Also it is important to find where the VPN is domiciled.  PureVPN is domiciled inn Hong Kong.  What do you think the chances are that the Chinese will turn over records in a response to a request from the USA, even if they do exist?  On the other hand, VPN's domiciled in Great Britain, the USA, Canada, etc. could be a different story.

Thanks for all the comments.  The other item of importance is AV software.  I guess its most important to (1) have some kind of AV software and (2) have some kind of VPN as opposed to not having either or both.  Many folks that I know that have Macs still believe that they are immune to viruses. Doing a certain amount of due diligence helps to get a "better" product, but having any mainstream av & VPN product is much better than not having any.

Macs are not immune to viruses, and certainly not when downloading anything P2P.

It goes without saying that you need a good AV to protect your system, and a good VPN if you are going to do P2P.
