Real number of peers often much larger than shown

The number of peers is shown as for instance 1 of 3, meaning there are 3 peers, but Vuze is connected to one of them.
However when I look at the torrent window I often notice that Vuze is trying to connect to far more peers, so in this example to far more as 3 peers. So the reported number of peers is incorrect, why is that?

You are talking about public torrents right?

Probably because the peers are from different trackers and or different sources (like DHT or peer exchange).

If you are talking about private sites . . . something sounds screwy.
