PLEASE HELP! configure ipvanish with VUZE/Telstra modem-port forwarding? Australia
#1
AAH!! I bought IPVanish hoping I could use in with VUZE (I am in Austrlalia). It is my last day today to change my mind and I cannot for the life of me get it to work--I am a Telstra client with a Technicolour modem TG797nx3.

I am not 'techy' so need easy instructions. I have found my internal address  and looked on a site called Port Forward but cannot find any info about the modem I use., Please help

Not quite sure what you are trying to do - install the VPN on the modem? In which case this wouldn't be a Vuze issue in particular... Or are you running the VPN on your computer? In which case your modem's port forwarding wouldn't be relevant as the VPN is responsible for end-to-end traffic routing.

Or have you got the VPN running on your computer but can't configure Vuze to use it? See http://wiki.vuze.com/w/Proxies_And_VPNs#...figuration

I have to set up a NAT in order to use Vuze with IPVanish? I have set up IPvanish on my pc but in order to use it with VUZE I've read I have to have a NAT set up. I"ve looked at a blog called Portforward which was mentioned in a VUZE blog but rather than giving port setups, it just tellls me to go to another site and purchase a port forwarding software....

Never come across VPN software that requires any kind of user-level NAT configuration - I assume you've following this:

https://www.ipvanish.com/software/

where does it mention NAT?

Many VPN's offer a 3 day trial or something like that.  If you are looking for a 100% free VPN . . . I would strongly recommend that you look for a paid VPN . . . the free VPN's are not worth the money you spend on them LOL

Here is a great place to start when considering a VPN:

https://torrentfreak.com/anonymous-vpn-s...15-150228/

The most important things (which are not mentioned in that article) are:

1) Can you port forward with the VPN???
2) Get a VPN based in a country which is different than your own country.
3) Get a VPN based in a country which does not have strong political ties to your country (for example if you live in Canada do not get a VPN based in the US).
4) Use a VPN server that is based in a country which does not have have strong political ties to your country.

I know some of those sound the same so let me give you an example.

Say you choose VPN-A.

VPN-A is based in South Korea but they have servers in:

USA
Romania
France
Sweden
Canada
South Korea

So even though you live in the US you are not complete safe with that South Korean VPN if you use the servers in the US and or Canada because even though South Korean laws would protect you from the anti-file sharing folks . . . the local laws apply to their servers in other countries so even using a South Korean based VPN is not enough you want to use one of the servers in Romania, Sweden, or South Korea for the most protection.

The downside to using a distant server is that your speed will suffer a little . . . but if you are looking for protection you are probabaly willing to sacrafic a little speed (by a little speed I mean somewhere in the 2% to 8% range).

Good Luck!

Right @GaryE! I totally agree with you using vpn services. Though most of them used free vpn I heard. However, while searched through the internet many sites came out. I checked it all one by one. And the following attached sites has caught my attention a lot http://www.bestvpnproviders.net/provider...ccess-com/

Can you check this and let me know about this site briefly? I'll wait for your reply here.

Whoever told you that most VPN's use free vpn does not know what they are talking about.  The vast majority of VPN's maintain their own servers that is the only way they can guarantee anonymity (the ones that use servers they do not control . . . I would not even consider them a proper VPN lol).

That VPN you linked is well thought of . . . but again if you live in the US I would not use a VPN who is based in the US.  With the new privacy laws it is possible (it has not happened that I have heard of but the wording of the laws allows it to happen) that an anti-file sharing person could see that you are using a US based provider.  Then that person could petition the courts to force the American VPN to record everything about your usage because the anti-file sharing person has very strong evidence that the person using a certain address at a certain time was file-sharing.

If that happens that great no-log VPN that you are paying for . . . is no longer protecting your anonymity.  I will admit that the odds of someone pinpointing that data to the point that it would hold up in court are very very slim but why take a chance?  Get a VPN based in a country in which you do not reside.

The same kind of thing hold true for the location of the copyright holder.

For example let us say you live in the US.

90% of what you download is German content (TV shows, movies, whatever).  The last thing you want to do in that case would be to choose a VPN based in Germany.  It is just too risky for the same reasons I mentioned above it is possible for the Germany copyright holders to go after the German VPN and demand they record everything about you.

So even if you live outside of the US and you torrent a lot of American stuff . . . you still do not want a US based VPN.

Not a lot of people talk about these aspects of VPN's for some reason . . . but it has always been a major factor for me.  If you want to minimize risk . . . you need to think about these things.  The article I linked above from torrent freak is really considered to be the best most neutral reviews of VPN's there is.

That site you linked looks and reads like a Marketing site where various VPN's got together to promote their services and control the message which is getting sent out.  It does not look like a good valid comparison and it does not read like a review.  But again I have heard from a lot of folks who use that VPN and it is in generally well thought of.

Finally I am not a lawyer so do not take this stuff I am saying as legal advice.  I just read a lot and I have been torrenting for a long time and I put together disparate pieces of information I have heard and read over the years!
