Fully fledged local media server

I have been thinking about using a media server for some time now, and have tried a few servies such as Emby, and Kodi, however, nothing seems to work very well. I was wondering if VUSE has the capability of functioning as my media server using the UPnP Media Server http://wiki.vuze.com/w/UG_Plugins#UPnP_Media_ServerThere is one thread I found that seems simular to what I was trying to do, however, it uses VLC as the server I think., and I have not had a lot of luck getting VLC to place nice. http://forum.vuze.com/Thread-IP-Binding-...dia+server

So I wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions as to what media server I should use, and/or how to use VUSE effectively for media streaming accross my local networtk.
