"Download for subscription" - Reloaded...
#1
Hello Brothers and Sisters,

I notice a resurgence of "Downloads for subscription" in Vuze, lately. Like many users, I suppose, especially those of us who live under the gun, I've set Vuze to shutdown when the last download has finished, and data has been checked.

Is "Download for subscription" a not-so-subtle way for Vuze to stay open longer than necessary, or wanted by the end-user?

After all, that kind of download keeps a "downloading (forced)" status for hours on end, effectively preventing Vuze from shutting down.

I know seeding is good, and leeching is bad, but still, I'd like to be in control, here...

EDIT: I've just finished downloading stuff, and sure enough, the "Download for subscription" is still active, with 0 sources out of 2, and 11 clients out of 17. Is there a way to add a timeout on such files, just to be on the safe side?

Imagine: You leave home for work in the morning while Vuze is downloading a file that should take no more than a few minutes to complete, and when you come back home at night, Vuze is still running...

Subscriptions within Vuze are small files that define associations between downloads themselves and where they 'came from' - if you have an RSS feed within Vuze (as an existing Vuze subscription) and you download X from that subscription then download X is associated with it. If someone else also downloads X Vuze will check the DHT for associated subscriptions and if it finds any it shows them to you so you have the option of also subscribing to the RSS feed (if interested).

To do this Vuze has to download the subscription details. Normally this is invisible to you, but if something prevents Vuze from directly getting the subscription it creates a special download (what you are seeing) to try and get this information.

If you're not bothered with subscriptions you can turn this off (Tools->Options->Subscriptions: download subscriptions from other clients when needed)

Then again, these kinds of downloads shouldn't prevent Vuze from closing - maybe I should take a look into that!

Hi parg,

That was fast! Thanks for taking the time to reply. I didn't know the nuts-and-bolts of those files, just that they prevent Vuze (I'm on a Mac, but I don't think this has to do with that) from shutting down when the last download is done. I don't mind leaving Vuze running for, say, 10 to 15 minutes after I'm done downloading because, after all, this is all about sharing stuff, not just gobbling up on my own, but I like to know what's happening on my machine.

Anyway, long story short, thanks for the explanation. I'll look into the setting you mentioned.

I do not have the "Subscriptions" tab under my options and I would like to turn off this function, and yes I am using advanced options. Has it been moved in a recent update?
