Insufficient Permissions to write

I have used Vuze for a while and it worked fine until a couple days ago. Suddenly, when I tried to download, it showed: Error: Insufficient permissions to write....

I have checked with your forum discussion, tried to debug it, and tried to uninstall/reinstall to no avail. I am at my wit's end and don't know what to do.

I'm using Window Vista and would like to solve this problem asap!

Help and Thank you!!!

Where are you trying to download to? Right-click one of those torrents and select 'Show Details,' tell us the Save Path.

Oh, you lost permissions to write to the Vuze data files.

'sly' is your user account, correct? It should have perfect access there if so. And this continues beyond restarting Vuze?

Is this for a single torrent, or for all new torrents?

Yes. Sly is the User and has full permission. It has been working fine until a couple days ago.

Yes, this continues beyond restarting Vuze, reinstall Vuze, and attaching debug files as advised in previous forums.

This happens to all new torrents.

Thank you for trying to help ......

My guess would be something is holding the file open in a write-lock..what happens if you make a copy elsewhere and try to delete one of the new files in that folder? Will it let you?

Yes. I can copy a new folder and delete that new folder.

I meant one of the files inside that folder (C:\Users\sly\AppData\Roaming\Azureus\Active), unless that is what you meant.

Make a copy of it elsewhere so you don't lose it (these are the files that track completion and other things for Vuze), delete that file inside the folder to see if it's locked with Vuze closed

I think you might find the problem. I tried to open the file: C:\Users\sly\AppData\Roaming\Azureus\Active, and the box pop out:

C:\Users\sly\AppData\Roaming\Azureus\Active is not accessible
The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable.

What should I do?

Try running a disk checker.

Right-click on C: in Explorer, Properties -> Tools -> Error-checking, 'Check now.' It'll tell you that it can't scan with the drive in use, so accept the schedule and reboot

Did it ask you to schedule the error checking and did it run on reboot?

It ran very quickly and I didn't even have time to see what was going on and it was done.

Okay, open a Command Prompt with Administrative privileges (if you have UAC on still, you'll need to go to Start -> Accessories, right-click 'Command Prompt' -> Run as Administrator)

Run 'chkdsk c:' to run it in read-only mode. Wait for it to finish and see if it says there are errors. If so, try 'chkdsk c: /f' to force it to do fixes. It'll tell you again that it can't fix while in use, so 'Y' to schedule, then try rebooting again.

If it doesn't fix the errors after that, not entirely sure what to say

Excuse me, how do I run as an administrator?

It won't recognize "Run as Administrator" as a command.

Is the 'Run as Administrator' prompt there when you right-click on the Command Prompt shortcut? If it's not, it may simply run as Administrator off the bat. Just open it and try the CHKDSK command above. If it works, then you don't need to worry about the 'Run as Administrator' thing.

There were errors found, and I scheduled a reboot. I'm going to reboot now.

Did everything as you instructed, but still couldn't open that Active Folder!!!

Can I just delete the whole folder and uninstalled the Vuze and then reinstalled it? Will this get me a new active folder?

It should, but you'll lose all your torrents in Vuze. You don't actually need to reinstall Vuze. It will see that folder missing automatically.

If you can, you might see if you can make a copy of that folder and see if that will work.

If not, you may have backups of all the .torrents you've loaded in C:\Users\sly\AppData\Roaming\Azureus\torrents

I checked the properties of the Active Folder, which is empty but has permission to write.

The Torrents folder seems to have a lot of torrent tracks.
At this point, I don't really mind to lose whatever in the Active Folder.
I'll try to delete that folder and see what happens.

Try re-naming it to something else. Sounds like there are some serious problems with the file system, though.

Hey! It worked!!

I renamed the Active to Junk and restarted Vuze. Now it is downloading music I randomly picked.
So far so good!

However, I still cannot delete that Junk Folder! Any advice?

Thank you very much for helping me solve this annoying headache!!

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Vista (and XP 64) do have a seriously insane file system problem.

Under poorly defined conditions, the folder properties security tab can go completely missing or users can disappear from the list of permitted users in that tab.
It's sometimes even necessary to manually add System back to the permitted users.
If System is still there, it may have dropped something else. Usually adding Users or Authenticated Users, will fix this.
The checkbox for file and sub-folder propagation should be also checked.

This seems to have something to do with a couple of Windows Updates.

Thank you very much for the info, although I don't know how to fix it.
Can only wait until next computer to replace the Vista! :=(
