Vuze permanently deleted 20GB of my files. Have a nice day!

Hi -

I wanted to seed a torrent that I had previously partially downloaded. I didn't have the .torrent file anymore. So I just re-downloaded it, and told it to save in the location where my data is. Then I did "Select All" and "Unmark Selected", because I didn't want to download the rest of the files in the torrent, just seed the ones I already had. Then I pressed "Ok", and stood back in amazement as Vuze silently and permanently deleted the 20GB I had already downloaded, with no way to get it back.

Am I a loser, or do you guys suck?

Well, you did tell Vuze not to download those files.

I just tried to reproduce and couldn't get it to delete my files. I took an already downloaded torrent with many data files, removed it from the client, then added it back in, using the "Select All", and "Unmark Selected", and making sure my directory was the same. I got a warning dialog that the files already existed on my system and they will be checked when the torrent starts. Click ok made the torrent immediately go to the seeding area. Opening the "Files" section of torrent details showed all the files marked as "Do Not Download" (as opposed to the dreaded "delete" setting), and all the files still existed on my system.

Something definitely sucks for you, but unfortunately I don't have a clue what it is :/ Do you remember if you go the dialog box warning that the files already existed? Can you remember any other steps you did?

You're right, I told Vuze I didn't want to download any files. Because I already had the files.

Do you think it's reasonable behavior for Vuze to assume that what I meant was that I wanted it to permanently erase all my existing files?

Because I don't. Seriously.

Is this the intended behavior of the software, and if so, is there anyone who can explain to me why it is intended to work that way? And if not, is there someone here who can start some kind of process of fixing it? Washii, your reply was less than helpful. Are you a volunteer, or do you work for Vuze?

I don't mean to be rude or demanding, but I'm really put off by this experience. I generally like Vuze, and I would like to help improve it by getting what to me is a glaring and critical data-destroying bug in the user interface repaired. How can I do that?

TuxPaper, thanks for your kind reply.

No, I didn't get any dialog box or warning of any kind.

I'll try to reproduce it and give an exact account of the steps, and get back to you soon.

Have you tried to force a recheck of the torrents, I had a similar problem and this was the solution because in my case is that the files were not verified for existing parts and thus the files were in the folder but in Vuze they appeared as 0% complete, but after that some files appeared incomplete due to boundary parts but they where complete in reality.

Ok, here are the steps to reproduce the problem:

1. make sure in Default Directory Options that "Automatically download to default directory (No Prompt)" is not checked.
2. download this example .torrent: http://www.legaltorrents.com/get/378-barry-schwartz---the-real-crisis-we-stopped-being-wise.torrent and open it in Vuze.
3. you will be prompted for where to save the data. Click the Browse button and select your ~/Downloads folder (or any other folder you want).
4. click "Ok". In a few minutes you will have the folder "~/Downloads/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise", which contains several files and another folder named "Content" which contains a video file of Barry Schwartz, who is a very interesting writer.
5. watch the video. It's very interesting. And soon it will be gone.
6. remove the torrent from Vuze, but don't delete the data. For example, right-click and choose "Remove and Delete Torrent File".
7. re-download the .torrent file and open it in Vuze.
8. this time, browse and instead of selecting "~/Downloads", make the following minor mistake: select the folder containing the existing files as the location to store the files. That is, select "~/Downloads/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise". That folder name will now show in the field labelled "Location to save data" in the middle of the "Open Torrent(s)" dialog box. On the other hand, you might notice that the field labelled "Save Location" at the top of the same dialog box says "~/Downloads/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise". If not, don't worry - I didn't notice that either.
9. press the "Select All" button, then the "Unmark Selected" button, since you don't want to download any files, just seed the ones you already have. Then click the "Ok" button.

What I expected to happen:
First, I would realize I had made a minor mistake in step 8. Then, I would expect an extra empty folder to have been created inside the original torrent folder. That is, I would expect the folder "~/Downloads/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise" to be created. And I would expect that folder to contain another empty folder named "Content". That is all. My existing files in "~/Downloads/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise" would not be touched, and I could just delete the superfluous folder and start again, this time choosing "~/Downloads" as the save location.

What actually happened:
The empty folder "~/Downloads/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise" was in fact created as I expected. However, it did not contain an empty folder named "Content", which I did not expect it to not do. And, all the other files in the enclosing parent folder, that is, within "~/Downloads/TED - Barry Schwartz - The real crisis_ We stopped being wise" were recursively permanently deleted without warning, leaving behind only an empty folder named "Content". Then I got hungry and ate a sandwich, and then I wrote this post.

Hi Elohe -

The files no longer exist in the folder on my hard drive. And I suddenly have 20GB of extra space on it. So unfortunately, doing a force-recheck doesn't really help a lot. Thanks anyway.

I can reproduce the faulty behaviour, the data will be deleted. Looks like a bug.

I've posted this problem to the "Bugs" forum. So I guess that answers my question.
