By configuring the browser properly to open magnet links with Vuze. (Add magnet as a protocol somewhere depending on your browser.)

thanks. my browser (firefox) is configured to open magnet links with vuze. Safari (mac default browser) doesn't have any option for magnet links in their preferences. Clicking on a magnet link results in opening Vuze without adding any download. It also results in opening Limewire, which was the default handler for magnet links. Limewire doesn't support torrents by default in mac os x 10.6. There seems to be a lots of bugs around magnet links so I'm just gonna stop using them, but if anyone has a solution for this it would be appreciated.

So what is the problem?

Safari (mac default browser) doesn't have any option for magnet links in their preferences.
Not a problem of Vuze.

Clicking on a magnet link results in opening Vuze without adding any download.
So you need to add a parameter.

It also results in opening Limewire, which was the default handler for magnet links.
There you go, change the default handler to Vuze then.

There seems to be a lots of bugs around magnet links
Which are? All I can see here are problems with other applications not configured properly to handle magnet links.

Try using the free RCDefaultApp to set which application handles the magnet urls when clicked in Safari.

1. The problem is still that clicking the magnet opens both azureus and limewire (which isn't a problem of vuze, just mentioned it along in case anyone knew why). The problem that concerns Vuze is that there is no download added in Vuze when it's started.

2. No, it's not (you're right) just mentioned it.

3. What parameter do I have to add in which string?

4. I meant default as in default configuration of the browser, the default magnet handler in Firefox is set to Vuze now. (It still opens limewire aswell anyway)

5. The problem that concerns Vuze is that there is no download added in Vuze when it's started.

I was tired last time I wrote but I now I wish you can see the problem, the other problems (the ones in Safari and Firefox) can you just ignore.

The info_hash of the magnet-links I'm trying to open is in hex and not in base32 if that might cause them to not work.

Thank you for the tip kdean. Works great. The problem with vuze remains though... Vuze doesn't appear to understand the magnet link at all.

I tried the
"Like on every other system: File -> Open -> Torrent File: Add URL"
(thank you cyb20)
resulting in:
code
Failed

In Vuze magnet links have to be encoded in base32. You can add the HEX hash without the magnet part as an URL though.

Aha thanks. Missed that vuze doesn't follow the bittorrent documentation of magnet-links

This documentation was done long after Vuze implemented its DHT.

I'll take a look - its always hard to predict 'standards' that are written long after you implement the current day standard, which was

So clearly this is a standards issue, the original spec called for it to be a B64 value and now its a sha1 value. The question is now, does vuze intend to support this changing standard (especially considering that TPB and the FF add-on magnetizer both use the sha1 values)? It seems like its a pretty easy fix to change the parser considering that it currently supports a raw sha1 value, just update the code so when it sees - magnet: it checks for both a sha1 and a b64 value.

EDIT: apparently yes.
