How to fix 100% CPU usage?

Hi all,
Using Vuze 4.0.0.2. on XP SP2. App runs fine with minimal CPU usage, then suddenly usage goes to 100%. I've tried pausing then restarting DLs, but at this point App runs very slow and seldom responds. After a certain time my machine actually hangs. Needless to say it's really frustrating.
Can someone tell me (in steps please) how to diagnose and possibly fix this issue.
Many thanks

Same answer than to your other thread:
First, you should upgrade to 4.0.0.4, as that was mainly bug fixes.
Secondly, after that 100% CPU utilization happens next time, you should generate a debug info report (from the Help menu), and then attach that generated debug.zip file to a message here. That should contain all the logs, which might enable others to diagnose the symptoms.

Does your processor have multiple cores? If so, you should try setting the Process Affinity in the Task Manager to a single CPU (uncheck all but one).
Do this in Task Manager, Processes tab, right-click on Azureus.exe, select 'Set Affinity.' If this helps, you will need to get Prio to save the Affinity and Priority between starts of the program (The Windows XP scheduler won't remember on its own).

Washii,
I wonder, why doesn't Vuze support multiple cores? Azureus did (It did in my case) and never got any problems with it. Now standard pc's have multiple cores all the programs seem to lag behind and get stuck ...
Shouldn't multiple cores be better for programs? Or are pipelines better?

It tends to be more of a problem with Java. It's underlying threading routines get a little stuck on Windows under somewhat heavy load. From what I've heard, it isn't as much of a problem on other operating systems.

A lot of other programs have issues because their instructions weren't meant to be split across several cores, which is what some schedulers will do regardless of the program having 1 or 2 threads on 4 or more cores.

The debug logs will be useful - 100% CPU is usually caused by either Vuze running out of memory (at which point Java expends more and more resources trying to garbage collect to make memory available) or a bug - often within Vuze whereby we can fix it (and the debug logs help here) or sometimes in components it uses (such as embedded browsers, Internet Explorer on Windows)

Hi,
Vuze ate up my CPU and I am now left with few Kb of disk space. I have deleted all files but it still won't return my space. This is the second PC with this problem, I wouldn't have used the second if I knew the problem was with Vuze. Please how do I fix this? I have attached the log. And I am not a techie, will appreciate all the help I could get. Thanks.

Maxing out the CPU doesn't consume disk space. Try emptying your recycle bin and looking for where the space is being consumed.

Thanks, but how do you "max out" the CPU? I have also emptied the recycle bin and search for any hidden files but it appears the memory just got "eaten up" somehow. Thanks for your help.

Like justanotheruser tried to exaplain to you, you are mixing things up.
Consuming CPU cycles (100% utilization, maxing out CPU) is momentarily processor utilization, not permanent usage of disk space by files.
You are talking about disk space, which is completely different thing than this thread's topic...

Thanks, my problem is with usage of disk space. Do you know of any useful thread? Thanks for your help.

Nope, you need to find out by yourself, which new(?) files consume your disk space. Maybe you just have too small disk.

I second the use of WinDirStat in the linked post. I use it myself when analyzing hard drives as a tech.

Do you need prio for vista too? Have new quad core machine, vuze keeps hanging my system. tried setting the affinity and it changes back every restart. not a tech myself. Does prio explain how to save affinity? Is it safe? beginning to think we need to uninstall vuze to get rid of the problem.

I use Prio on all my machines. And, yes, you likely need it on Vista as well.
You set the affinity, Prio saves it by default when installed. Voila.
